TOKYO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- About 64.8 billion yen (420 million U.S. dollars) in Japan's public funds were improperly managed in fiscal year 2023, Japan's Board of Audit disclosed in a report on Wednesday.

The report identified 345 cases of tax wastage and called for improvements to prevent further misuse of public funds.

Substantial instances of inappropriate COVID-19-related subsidy claims were revealed in the report, with a Tokyo clinic alone receiving over 560 million yen in improperly claimed subsidies.

Among ministries, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries led in the amount of misused funds, totaling over 35.34 billion yen, followed by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare with 7.76 billion yen, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism with 2.32 billion yen, according to the report.
