LILONGWE, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that at least 2.2 million Malawians have registered in the first phase of the voter registration process, representing 65 percent of the projected 3.4 million eligible voters across 14 districts.
In a statement issued Friday, MEC noted that of the 2.2 million registered voters, 891,000, or 40 percent, are male and 1.3 million are female, representing 60 percent, according to Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi. The figures are preliminary, as the commission will still clean the data to account for any duplicate registrations.
Phase Two of the voter registration process began Saturday, and will continue until Nov. 22, targeting 11 additional districts nationwide.
Malawi currently has 20 registered political parties, with major contenders including the ruling Malawi Congress Party, the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party, the United Transformation Movement, and the United Democratic Front set to compete in the tripartite general elections in September 2025.
MEC projected earlier that up to 11 million Malawians will be eligible to vote in the 2025 elections, up from 6.8 million in 2019. Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera, who is seeking a second term, has launched a series of nationwide whistle-stop campaigns, urging all eligible Malawians to register. Enditem
