RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo missed the chance to maintain its six-point lead at the top of Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday after being held to a goalless home draw by relegation-threatened Cuiaba.
The host controlled 74% of possession and had 28 scoring attempts but it failed to convert its dominance into goals.
The result leaves Botafogo with 68 points, four points ahead of second-placed Palmeiras with five match days remaining. Cuiaba is 19th with 29 points.
"This result is extremely unfair for us but we have to accept that this can happen in football," Botafogo manager Artur Jorge said.
"We still have a four-point advantage and that puts us in a privileged position. We remain in control of our own destiny and we have to know how to deal with that."
In other Brazilian top-flight fixtures on Saturday, Corinthians won 2-1 at Vitoria, Cruzeiro secured a 2-1 home win over Criciuma, Juventude prevailed 2-1 at home to Bahia, Fortaleza romped to a 3-0 home victory over Vasco da Gama, Atletico Goianiense was held to a goalless home draw by Bragantino, and Sao Paulo won 2-1 at home to Athletico Paranaense.
