PORT-LOUIS, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Navinchandra Ramgoolam, leader of the Alliance of Change opposition coalition that won the Mauritian parliamentary elections Sunday, was appointed prime minister by President Prithvirajsing Roopun Tuesday.

The appointment followed the resignation of Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and his entire Cabinet on the same day.

According to final results released Monday night, the opposition coalition won 60 of the 62 contested seats, while the People's Alliance led by Jugnauth failed to win any seat.

Thanks to the "Best Loser System," a pillar of ethnic representation in the Mauritian parliament that seeks to guarantee the voting rights of minority groups in the hemicycle, two candidates from Jugnauth's alliance were designated as deputies.

Ramgoolam, 77, is the son of the late Sivosagur Ramgoolam, the first prime minister of Mauritius. He became the leader of the Mauritius Labor Party in June 1991 and was elected as a member of parliament in September as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.

He served as prime minister of Mauritius from 1995 to 2000 and 2005 to 2014. Enditem
