JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The South African government on Saturday condemned in the "strongest possible terms" what it described as Israel's "continued acts of aggression" against Syria.
"The recent attack on Nov. 14, 2024, in the Damascus suburb of Mazzeh, near the South African Embassy, other diplomatic missions, and United Nations offices, is a blatant disregard for international law and the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic," the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said in a statement.
The South African government extended its sympathies and condolences to the government and people of Syria, particularly the families of those killed in the attacks.
"The continued aggression undermines regional and international peace and security," DIRCO said.
The department said that the more than 120 attacks on Syria since Oct. 7, 2023, have exacerbated the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
"South Africa calls on the United Nations to hold accountable those responsible, in line with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter," it added. Enditem
