TASHKENT, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan has designated 2025 as the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy to address growing environmental challenges.
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev made the announcement while addressing the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (the lower house of parliament) on Wednesday.
In his speech, Mirziyoyev emphasized that the adverse effects of climate change are being felt in Uzbekistan and globally.
He recalled the nationwide "Green Space" initiative launched in 2021, noting that the Central Asian country is implementing a regional climate strategy in cooperation with neighboring countries in response to environmental challenges.
He said green energy is a significant driver of Uzbekistan's economic growth and the government is developing a state program to address the most pressing issues outlined this year.
Uzbekistan has set a goal to significantly increase its renewable energy capacity, with a goal of achieving a 40-percent share of renewables in the national energy mix by 2030. Enditem
