TOKYO, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Supermarket sales in Japan dropped in October as unusually warm weather reduced demand for autumn and winter clothing, recent industry data showed.
The Japan Chain Stores Association reported total sales of 1.02 trillion yen (about 6.6 billion U.S. dollars) at superstores, a 1.3-percent decrease compared to the previous year on a same-store basis.
While food sales rose by 2.4 percent due to higher prices for staples like rice and vegetables, clothing sales plummeted over 10 percent, as unseasonably high temperatures dampened demand for coats and other apparel.
Prolonged inflation has also impacted consumer behavior, with many opting to save on everyday items. The association noted a decline in customer numbers compared to the same period last year.
On the outlook, the association expects the upcoming winter bonuses and holiday shopping will help revive consumer spending. Enditem
