Schools shut ahead of extreme rains in south India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- All schools and educational institutions have been shut in Puducherry and Karaikal areas, in south India in the wake of extremely heavy rains expected over the next 24 to 48 hours, announced Puducherry Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam on Tuesday.

According to the local meteorological department, a deep depression was likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in these areas.

Director of Regional Meteorological Center (Chennai) S. Balachandran said, "As of now, yesterday's depression intensifies today morning into a deep depression. It is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm and move towards the north direction, towards the Tamil Nadu coast." Enditem
