JAKARTA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government is likely to delay the enforcement of a value-added tax (VAT) hike to 12 percent following widespread rejection across the country, Head of the National Economic Council Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said on Wednesday.

Last month, the country's parliament approved raising the VAT from 11 percent to 12 percent, with implementation initially set for Jan. 1 next year. The increase aims to boost state revenue and expand the tax base.

"It is almost certain that the hike will be postponed," Luhut told reporters, citing weak economic conditions as the primary reason. He emphasized the need for economic stimulus packages to support people whose purchasing power has declined.

"A new economic stimulus must be provided to the public before the hike is implemented," he said, but did not specify how long the delay would last. Enditem
