TBILISI, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's ruling party Georgian Dream nominated parliament member Mikheil Kavelashvili as the presidential candidate on Wednesday.

Kavelashvili's nomination was announced by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream.

"I am pleased to announce that in accordance with the decision of the political council of Georgian Dream, Mikheil Kavelashvili is nominated to the post of Georgian president," Ivanishvili said at a press briefing.

Georgia will hold the presidential election on Dec. 14.

It is the first time the new Georgian president will not be elected by direct popular vote. The new president will be elected by a 300-member electoral college, including members of parliament and delegates of the regions.

Salome Zourabishvili was elected Georgian president in 2018. Her term expires on Dec. 16. Enditem
