TEHRAN, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Saturday strongly condemned an attack by armed "terrorist elements" on Iran's consulate general in northern Syria's Aleppo city.

He made the remarks in a statement while reacting to the attack without elaborating on its time and potential damage.

Baghaei pointed to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, "which prohibits any invasion against consular premises," saying the convention's violation by any individual, group, or government was not accepted.

Noting that the Iranian consul general and the diplomatic mission's staff members are in full health, Baghaei said Iran would take serious legal and international actions against the attack.

Militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an al-Qaida-linked extremist organization, and allied opposition factions launched a major offensive in the countryside of the northern Syrian provinces of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, resulting in dozens of deaths, including a senior member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

By Friday, the rebel militants had advanced into parts of Aleppo city for the first time since they were driven out of the city in 2016. Enditem
