BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Claudio Aquino scored a first-half winner as leader Velez Sarsfield edged closer to Argentina's Primera Division title on Sunday with a 1-0 home victory over Sarmiento.
Aquino converted from the penalty spot in the 41st minute at El Fortin after Ivan Morales was deemed to have handled the ball inside the area.
The host was in cruise control thereafter, dominating possession and squandering several chances to extend its lead as it secured its 13th win of the campaign.
The Buenos Aires outfit now has a five-point lead over second-placed Racing Club with two match days remaining in the season, although the latter has a game in hand. Sarmiento is 25th in the 28-team standings with 24 points from 25 outings.
"Every match is incredibly difficult for us and we're finding it particularly hard to score," Velez defender Elias Gomez said. "The three points today are of vital importance."
In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Independiente won 2-0 at home to Central Cordoba, and Boca Juniors registered a 1-0 home win over Gimnasia. Enditem
