ANKARA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization has "neutralized" a senior Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) operative in a targeted operation in northern Syria, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported on Monday, citing unnamed Turkish security sources.
The suspect, identified as Yasar Cekik and known by the alias Yasar Hakkari, was killed in the Tel Rifaat region of Syria. The exact timing of the operation was not disclosed.
Cekik, who joined the PKK in 1993, was reportedly responsible for several high-profile attacks against Turkish military and security forces. One of the most notable was a 2010 assault on the Hantepe gendarmerie station in Türkiye's eastern Hakkari province, which killed six soldiers.
In 2011, he allegedly orchestrated deadly attacks on the Kekliktepe base and the Cukurca 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion Command, resulting in 24 deaths and one injury, according to Anadolu.
Listed in the red category of Türkiye's most-wanted terrorists, Cekik was also sought by Interpol for multiple offenses spanning Türkiye, Iraq, and Syria.
The PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has waged an insurgency against the Turkish government for more than three decades. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives. Enditem
