THE HAGUE, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) began public hearings on Monday to address legal obligations related to climate change under international law.

The proceedings on Monday was presided over by ICJ President Nawaf Salam, and representatives of countries including Vanuatu, South Africa, Albania, Germany, Antigua and Barbuda, Saudi Arabia, and Australia presented oral statements.

According to the court's schedule, the hearings will continue until Dec. 13. Over the course of the proceedings, representatives from 98 countries and 12 international organizations are expected to deliver statements.

The ICJ convened these hearings at the request of the UN General Assembly. On March 29, 2023, the General Assembly adopted a resolution asking the court to provide an advisory opinion on key legal questions related to climate change.

These include the obligations of states under international law to protect the climate system and environment and the legal consequences for states whose actions or inactions have caused significant harm to the climate system and environment. Enditem
