KHARTOUM, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- At least eight civilians were killed and 13 others injured in an artillery attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) in El Fasher in western Sudan, a medical group announced on Tuesday.
"The Zamzam IDP camp came under intensive artillery shelling by the RSF for the second day in a row, killing eight civilians and wounding 13 others, including women and children, who are in critical conditions," the non-governmental Sudanese Doctors Network said in a statement
According to the network, the attack took place on Monday evening.
On Monday, the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said in a statement that Sudan's largest displacement camp is under attack, with intense shelling by the RSF.
"The attack, which began in the early evening on December 1, has created a living nightmare for displaced people in Zamzam camp, with casualties, panic, and mass displacement," the MSF said.
The situation is beyond chaotic, while patients and medical staff are leaving the camp and trying to run for their lives, the statement said, noting that "MSF's hospital in the camp is now empty, with the last three ICU patients still dependent on oxygen evacuated under dangerous conditions."
The RSF has not issued any comment on the attack on the Zamzam camp.
The Zamzam camp, some 12 km south of El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State, is one of the largest IDP camps in Darfur.
According to the United Nations, the camp accommodates nearly 500,000 people due to ongoing clashes in El Fasher.
Since May 10, fierce clashes have raged in El Fasher between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF.
Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023.
The deadly conflict has resulted in more than 27,120 deaths and displaced over 14 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to estimates by international organizations. Enditem
