ABUJA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed after an overloaded minibus rammed into a stationary truck and burst into flames in Nigeria's northern state of Yobe, police said Wednesday.

The accident occurred on the Baimari-Geidam road late Tuesday, Livinus Yilzoom, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria's traffic police, told reporters in the state's capital city Damaturu.

He said the victims, including the minibus driver, were burned beyond recognition due to the magnitude of the fire that erupted following the crash.

Citing a preliminary investigation by the traffic police, Yilzoom attributed "road obstruction on the part of the truck, and excessive speed and overloading on the part of the minibus," as the possible causes of the accident.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving. Enditem
