KIGALI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda is taking decisive steps to integrate climate change solutions with trade policies to foster green industrialization and competitiveness, a senior official said Thursday.
Prudence Sebahizi, Rwanda's minister of trade and industry, made the remark during the public-private workshop on Action on Climate and Trade (ACT) in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
The one-day event brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore the intersection of climate change and trade, aiming to strengthen Rwanda's green trade capacities and enhance the nation's competitiveness in the global market.
"ACT will help Rwanda promote green industrialization, invest in technical skills, and address market challenges. It will support our sustainable development vision by aligning trade policies with climate change goals," Sebahizi said.
He emphasized the critical impact climate change has on the nation's trade-related infrastructure and productivity. "Climate change presents significant challenges to our trade, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors," Sebahizi added.
Rwanda's involvement in ACT is poised to support the country's ongoing efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation, aligning with Rwanda's vision for sustainable economic development, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
The event also aligns with Rwanda's broader environmental goals, following the recent launch of the National Climate and Nature Strategy, which seeks to enhance the country's resilience to climate change while promoting economic development and social well-being.
The ACT, unveiled in April of last year by the World Trade Organization, the World Bank Group, and the World Economic Forum, targets developing economies, including least-developed countries like Rwanda, to use trade as a tool for meeting climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. Enditem
