TOKYO, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Shibuya City, one of Tokyo's top destinations for tourism and nightlife, on Friday announced the cancellation of the New Year countdown event in front of Shibuya Station for the fifth consecutive year.

The decision is part of broader efforts to address street drinking, littering, noise, and dangerous overcrowding, which are common during festive periods with high visitor numbers, according to the Shibuya City Office.

On New Year's Eve, security measures will be heightened around Shibuya Station, while temporary fencing will be installed around the iconic Hachiko statue from Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. of Jan. 1, 2025.

In addition, stores selling alcoholic beverages have been asked to refrain from doing so during the holiday period, complementing the city's permanent ban on nighttime street drinking, implemented in October.

In a comment, Ken Hasebe, mayor of Shibuya City, called for continued vigilance against nuisance caused by street drinking and accidents in overcrowded places. Enditem
