YANGON, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Yangon Branch awarded stipends and scholarships to 100 Myanmar students from the University of Yangon for the first semester of the 2024-25 academic year at a ceremony held in Yangon on Friday.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ma Jia expressed her delight, noting that the Bank of China (BOC) Scholarship Program has provided 300 scholarships and stipends to students from the University of Yangon since the launch of the program in 2022.

She encouraged the students to work hard, build their skills, and strive to become outstanding individuals who can support their parents, contribute to society, and aid in national development.

Li Tong, deputy chief executive of the Bank of China Hong Kong (Holdings) Limited, thanked the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) for its role in facilitating the scholarships.

She highlighted that in recent years, the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Yangon Branch has actively engaged in social and philanthropic activities.

The provision of scholarships to the students in Myanmar aims to enhance human resource development, promote sustainable economic growth in Myanmar, and improve the lives of its people, she said.

Dr. Tin Maung Tun, rector of the University of Yangon, expressed gratitude to the Bank of China (Hong Kong) and the CFRD for their support to students in need in Myanmar.

He also praised the BOC Scholarship Program for not only offering financial assistance but also providing capacity-building opportunities and internship programs for the students.

He encouraged the students to participate in workshops and training sessions organized by the BOC, saying that these activities would provide them with valuable knowledge and experiences for their future careers.

On Friday, the BOC scholarship program for the students for the first semester of the 2024-25 academic year provided 75 stipends and 25 scholarships for 100 students from the University of Yangon. Enditem
