THE HAGUE, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Netherlands will introduce flexible border controls starting Monday as part of efforts to combat irregular migration and human trafficking, Minister of Asylum and Migration Marjolein Faber said on Friday.

In a letter to the House of Representatives, Faber said that the checks will be flexible, with no permanent checkpoints or designated crossing points established unless absolutely necessary.

She stressed the need to minimize disruptions for travelers and trade. "The Royal Marechaussee (military police) will operate flexibly, and no permanent checkpoints will be set up."

Under European regulations and existing agreements with neighboring countries, individuals who do not meet entry or residency requirements in the Netherlands will be transferred accordingly.

The move follows Germany's decision in September to reinstate passport checks at all land borders to address irregular migration, terrorism threats, and cross-border organized crime.

The Netherlands shares land borders with Germany to the east and Belgium to the south. Enditem
