BAGHDAD, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 Syrian army personnel entered Iraq on Saturday through the Qaim border crossing in the western Iraqi province of Anbar, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

Those Syrian soldiers requested to enter Iraq and were received and provided with the necessary care, the INA quoted an unnamed source as saying.

Meanwhile, a military source from Anbar Operations Command told Xinhua that over 1,000 Syrian personnel, including officers, entered the Iraqi territories after obtaining official permissions.

The source said the Syrian personnel handed over their weapons and equipment to Iraqi forces immediately upon entering Iraqi territories, stressing that their presence in Iraq is temporary until arrangements are made for their return to their country.

Since Nov. 27, Syrian rebel groups, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have launched major offensives on multiple fronts in Syria, advancing further on government-held territories after seizing key cities like Aleppo and Hama. Enditem
