ISLAMABAD, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday that his country is committed to eradicating corruption by enforcing strict accountability measures and promoting transparency in governance.
In his message on the International Anti-Corruption Day observed on Monday, the president said, "Corruption undermines public trust, drains vital resources, and hampers socio-economic development."
Over the years, he said Pakistan has taken significant steps to align with international anti-corruption frameworks, including the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), and has implemented a robust accountability regime.
"The National Accountability Bureau of Pakistan, as the apex anti-corruption agency, played a central role in investigating and prosecuting corruption cases, as well as in raising public awareness about its harmful effects," Zardari said, adding that the challenge of corruption is vast, and its complexity requires all organs of the state to make strenuous endeavors to reduce corruption.
The president said that a change in collective behavior is also needed to create a culture where corruption is no longer tolerated at any level, underlining that resources intended for public welfare should be used for their rightful purpose.
"We should create an environment of integrity and transparency and work for a future in which character-building becomes paramount in our society," he added. Enditem
