KHARTOUM, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) on Monday urged an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, emphasizing the need for the country's reconstruction and the safe return of displaced populations.

The statement followed a meeting in Port Sudan between Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, according to a sovereign council statement.

"The meeting with the chairman of the sovereign council was very positive," Aboul Gheit told reporters, reaffirming the AL's willingness to work with the African Union and the international community to restore peace and stability in Sudan.

Sudan's representative to the AL, Imad Al-Din Adawi, underscored the League's role as a "security fence," highlighting the importance of non-interference in the country's domestic affairs.

Aboul Gheit arrived in Port Sudan earlier on Monday for a two-day visit, during which he also met Ibrahim Jabir, a sovereign council member, and held discussions with Sudanese ministers of foreign affairs, culture, and information.

Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023. The fighting has claimed over 27,120 lives and displaced more than 14 million people, according to international estimates. Enditem
