ABUJA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of villagers, mostly women and children, were kidnapped two days ago by suspected bandits in Nigeria's northwestern state of Zamfara, local media reported Tuesday.
Between 26 and 50 locals were abducted from the Kakin Dawa village of the Maradun local government area of the state by suspected bandits on Sunday morning, according to the report.
Witnesses said the heavily armed gunmen stormed the village, firing sporadically and catching local vigilantes off guard. The assailants conducted a house-to-house search before fleeing through a nearby forest.
Nigerian security authorities have yet to comment on the incident, which is the latest in a series of attacks in Zamfara, one of the most frequently targeted states in the country's northern region. Enditem
