COLOMBO, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has launched a solar energy project to produce green hydrogen under the port's green energy initiative, SLPA Managing Director Ganaka Hemachandra has said.

Hemachandra said on Monday that the project will use land owned by the SLPA and the Port of Colombo (POC).

He said only about 42 percent of Sri Lanka's total energy generation is from green sources, emphasizing the importance of implementing effective measures to immediately address greenhouse gas emissions in all port-related activities.

As Sri Lanka's premier port, POC currently consumes 25 percent of the total energy in the city of Colombo.

He said the POC is implementing cutting-edge technologies to minimize both energy wastage and greenhouse gas emissions.

The East Container Terminal (ECT) at the port is designed to use clean energy and will be the port's first semi-automated terminal with the employment of green robotics and AI-driven technologies for ship and yard planning.

By 2025, the POC is expected to provide green shore power to vessels docking at its terminals, further enhancing its environmental sustainability, he said. Enditem
