DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced on Tuesday that the country will nominate Mohamed Janabi as a candidate for the position of World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Africa.

Janabi, executive director of the Muhimbili National Hospital and president's advisor on health and medical affairs, will replace WHO Regional Director for Africa-elect Faustine Ndugulile, who died on Nov. 7 while receiving medical treatment in India.

Ndugulile had been elected to the post in August 2024 during the 74th WHO General Assembly in Brazzaville, the Republic of the Congo, and was scheduled to assume office in March 2025.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed leaders in Zanzibar, Hassan expressed her confidence in Janabi's qualifications and extensive experience in healthcare.

Hassan said Janabi, a renowned cardiologist, was selected after the government reviewed the curricula vitae of five potential candidates. Enditem
