SYDNEY, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- A man has been shot by police in eastern Australia after allegedly threatening officers with a knife.
Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) declared a critical incident after the shooting in Grafton, approximately 500 km north of Sydney and 250 km south of Brisbane, on Wednesday morning.
In a statement, NSW Police said that the officers were deployed to a public park in Grafton at about 6:30 a.m. local time to respond to reports of a concern for welfare.
"On arrival, police located and attempted to engage with a man," NSW Police said.
"The man allegedly approached police and threatened them with a knife before he was shot by police."
Officers immediately administered first aid until the arrival of ambulance paramedics.
The man, who has not been publicly identified, was then airlifted to hospital in a stable but serious condition.
No police officers were injured.
NSW Police said that a critical incident team will investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The NSW Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, the state's independent police oversight body, said it would monitor the police investigation to ensure public confidence. Enditem
