WINDHOEK, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Namibia is to introduce a new regional rugby competition.
This initiative, backed by the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU), aims to elevate the standard of the sport and prepare the national team for future international challenges.
NRU Vice President Christian Windvogel said the highly anticipated Senior Men's Regional 15s Competition is scheduled to kick off on February 22, 2025, with additional fixtures set for March 1 and 8.
"The tournament will showcase the best of Namibian rugby talent, featuring three senior regional teams alongside a fourth team comprised of Under-20 players, offering a unique blend of experience and youth in every match," he said.
According to Windvogel, the competition will serve as a preparatory platform for Namibia's participation in the 2025 Africa Cup in Uganda, which also serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The competition not only aims to strengthen the depth of talent within the senior men's and U20 squads but also fosters regional pride and unity, while reinforcing Namibia's rugby pathway development, added Windvogel. Enditem
