NAIROBI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Kenya national football team head coach Engin Firat resigned on Wednesday after the installation of new leadership at the Football Kenya Federation.
Firat came under mounting pressure after failing to qualify the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohamed confirmed he had received the resignation letter from Firat.
He spoke to the media in his first press conference since taking over as the country's football chief in elections held last weekend.
"The matter has since been forwarded to the new FKF Executive Committee for review and deliberation. As you are aware, Kenya, along with Uganda and Tanzania, will be co-hosting the African Nations Championship next year. It is important we move with speed to put in place a strong team for the competition," Hussein added.
Kenya failed to reach the 2025 AFCON finals after finishing third in Group J in qualifications.
Firat, who was appointed in October 2021, won only three competitive matches in his three-year stint. Overall, the 54-year-old won six matches, drew seven, and lost nine in the 22 games he was in charge. Enditem
