AMMAN, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The first step toward achieving comprehensive calm in the Middle East region is to stop the Israeli war on Gaza, which requires immediate and serious global action, King Abdullah II of Jordan said Thursday.
During the king's meeting in Aqaba with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the two sides also addressed efforts to enhance humanitarian response in Gaza, according to a statement by Jordan's Royal Hashemite Court.
The king also warned of the dangers posed by unilateral Israeli measures in the West Bank, and its continued assaults on holy sites in Jerusalem, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the king reiterated Jordan's respect for the choices of the Syrian people while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Syria's security and the safety of its citizens, the statement said.
He reaffirmed that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace and to prevent the region from descending into further conflicts, the statement added.
Following the meeting, Blinken wrote on social media platform X that he and the Jordanian king discussed developments in Syria, and the importance of "an inclusive transition to an accountable, representative government in Syria chosen by the Syrian people," among other topics. Enditem
