KIGALI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's newly appointed Chief Justice Domitilla Mukantaganzwa was sworn in on Thursday during a ceremony in Kigali, the country's capital.

Mukantaganzwa, 60, took the oath of office for a five-year mandate alongside her deputy, Alphonse Hitiyaremye. The ceremony was presided over by Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

In his address, Kagame said it is necessary for everyone to "follow the path of living in harmony, and to uphold justice and the laws that we must all embrace." He emphasized the importance of equality and unity, urging the justice system to reflect these principles.

Mukantaganzwa vowed to fulfill her responsibilities with diligence and ensure the timely delivery of justice.

Prior to her appointment, she served as the chairperson of the Rwanda Law Reform Commission. Mukantaganzwa also headed the country's traditional Gacaca courts from 2003 to 2012, where she oversaw trials for genocide-related cases. Enditem
