JAKARTA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia was set to implement a rehabilitation and reconstruction program in Sukabumi regency, West Java province, following flash floods and landslides that killed 10 people and destroyed thousands of homes and infrastructure last week, an official said on Friday.
The disaster damaged 5,492 homes, destroyed 10 bridges, and affected other infrastructure facilities, according to data from the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency.
Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the agency, said that rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts would commence after the ongoing emergency relief operations were completed.
"Emergency relief efforts are currently underway. After that, a reconstruction and rehabilitation program will begin," Muhari told Xinhua.
As part of the program, the government will provide compensation funds to residents whose homes were damaged by the disaster. In addition to repairing homes, damaged infrastructure will also be rebuilt, he added.
To ensure the program runs smoothly, the agency and local authorities will continue to conduct risk assessments and gather data.
According to Muhari, the natural disaster forced 4,653 residents to evacuate, seeking shelter in evacuation centers. Enditem
