SANTIAGO, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck central Chile on Friday, with no immediate reports of casualties or material damage, local authorities reported.
The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile reported that the tremor occurred at 8:38 p.m. local time (2338 GMT), 52 km southeast of the city of Curico, and 200 km south of the Chilean capital of Santiago.
According to the report, the quake occurred at a depth of 114 km and was felt in surrounding areas, including the capital, where more than 7 million people live.
The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy indicated that the tremor did not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami along Chile's coast.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service continues to assess potential damage to people, infrastructure and essential services.
Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Chile is considered one of the most seismically active countries on the planet. Enditem
