ISLAMABAD, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed and another injured in an exchange of fire in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police officials said on Friday.

The incident happened in Mingora area of Swat district of the province when unknown terrorists attacked a police party deployed for security in the area, killing a police officer on the spot while injuring another officer, Swat police told Xinhua.

In retaliatory fire by the police, an assailant was also killed, said police. Following the incident, an additional contingent of police along with rescue teams reached the scene and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.

Police have started an investigation and launched a search operation in the surrounding areas to arrest the accomplices of the terrorists involved in the attack.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Enditem
