AMMAN, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria on Saturday voiced support for a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political transition, according to a statement released by the Jordanian foreign ministry.

During a meeting in Jordan's coastal city of Aqaba, the committee said the transition should involve all political and social forces in Syria, and should be under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) and the Arab League and in accordance with the principles, objectives, and mechanisms of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, said the statement.

"This includes forming a transitional governing body through Syrian consensus and implementing steps outlined in the resolution to transition to a new political system that meets the aspirations of all Syrians through free and fair elections supervised by the UN, based on a new constitution drafted by the Syrians within defined timelines," it said.

The committee, which includes Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, and the Arab League, with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar participating in the meeting, also expressed solidarity with the Syrian people and willingness to provide all possible supports for them, said the statement.

It urged the immediate cessation of all military operations in Syria, a comprehensive national dialogue, and the preservation of Syria's state institutions, the statement said.

It called for necessary resources to establish a UN mission to assist Syria in supporting and overseeing the political transition process, the statement said. Enditem
