TEHRAN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said here Tuesday the reopening of the country's embassy in Syria is on the agenda.

Certain requirements have to be met for the reopening, including ensuring the security of the diplomatic mission and its staff, he told a weekly press conference.

"Once the necessary security and political ground is prepared, Iran will reopen its embassy," he said.

Noting that the Syrian ambassador and the Syrian embassy's diplomatic staff are still in Tehran, Baghaei said, "We will make our decision about the future of the Syrian embassy in view of the developments that are unfolding in Syria and based on the decision of Arab state's new governing body."

A militant alliance led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham waged a major military operation from northern Syria on Nov. 27, sweeping southwards through government-held areas and capturing Damascus within 12 days.

On Dec. 8, the Syrian militant groups stormed Iran's embassy in Damascus following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government. Baghaei confirmed then that Iranian diplomats had vacated before the attack. Enditem
