KAMPALA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan defeated Sudan 1-0 on Wednesday to qualify for the semifinal at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) - CECAFA qualifiers in Uganda.
The win, with the sole goal scored by Lazarus Peter George Laku, maintained South Sudan's winning record in the competition at the Nakivubo Hamz Stadium in Kampala.
Laku netted his second goal of the tournament after 33 minutes, firing past Sudan's goalkeeper Mamadu Mohamed Musa Ali in the Group B match.
Sudan tried to regroup, with Faisal Omer Mohamed Mustafa and Sami Hassan Idris Koko creating opportunities in front of goal but failing to convert them.
After winning 3-0 against Somalia in the opening match and now a 1-0 win over Sudan, South Sudan advanced to the semifinal, joining Tanzania, who qualified earlier from Group A.
South Sudan coach Nasir Yousif Hassen Bakit said his players took their chance and won with one goal to advance. "We know there is still a lot of work to do as we prepare for the semifinal," he added.
Sudan coach Mutasim Khalid Omer Eltaher said that although his team did not win, they created some good scoring chances. "We have no option but to try and win against Somalia if we are to qualify for the next stage," added the coach.
Action returns on December 21 with Somalia facing Sudan in a Group B match, while host Uganda takes on Kenya in a Group A tie. Enditem
