NEW YORK, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Luigi Mangione, 26, suspect for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown of Manhattan on Dec. 4, returned to New York City on Thursday after he waived his extradition from Pennsylvania.
Mangione was transported back to Manhattan by a local police chopper after he was flown to MacArthur Airport on Long Island from Altoona, Pennsylvania.
In addition to charges of murder from Manhattan prosecutors, federal prosecutors on Thursday charged Mangione with murder through use of a firearm, two counts of stalking and a firearms offense, according to media reports.
Federal charges could bring the possibility of death penalty while New York state charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Mangione was scheduled to make an initial appearance in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on Thursday afternoon.
Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Dec. 9. Enditem
