Western Province leads with 43.7 pct of Sri Lanka's GDP in 2023

COLOMBO, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Western Province accounted for the largest share (43.7 percent) of the country's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023, a marginal decline compared to 2022, the country's central bank announced in a statement on Friday.

The North Western (10.9 percent) and Central (10.3 percent) provinces followed as the second and third largest contributors respectively, according to the central bank.

The Western Province, the country's most populous province, maintained its dominance in industrial activities, contributing nearly half (48.7 percent) of the total industry value in 2023, the central bank stated.

It also claimed the largest share of services activities, accounting for 45.9 percent, according to the central bank.

Meanwhile, the North Western Province led in agricultural activities, contributing 19.6 percent of the total agricultural output in 2023.

In comparison, the Western Province contributed 43.9 percent of the country's nominal GDP in 2022, the central bank noted. Enditem
