NAIROBI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ninety-four Kenyan public servants have graduated from a Huawei-sponsored training program on cybersecurity.
The graduation ceremony Thursday, which was graced by senior officials and Huawei executives, in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cybersecurity cooperation between Huawei Kenya and the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee.
Raymond Omollo, principal secretary in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, said that through support from Huawei, the government has trained a critical mass of personnel to protect digital assets and foster innovation and enterprise.
Kenya recognizes the transformative potential of the ongoing digital revolution that has improved the quality of government services, unleashed jobs, and sustainable revenue streams for the youth, he said.
Omollo observed that as the country's digital economy grows rapidly, threats to cyberspace have also evolved, necessitating the need to upskill students and civil servants in order for them to detect, preempt, or report potential attacks.
"Disruptions to our digital infrastructure or services pose significant threats, not only to individual sectors like telecommunications and finance but also to critical areas such as power, transport, and healthcare," he said.
Omollo said the establishment of the proposed National Cyber Security Agency, the National Cybersecurity Operations Center, and the Cyber Security Center of Excellence will be pivotal to enhancing the resilience of Kenya's digital infrastructure.
Steven Zhang, deputy chief executive officer for public affairs at Huawei Kenya, said strategic partnerships are key to strengthening cyber defenses in the country and fostering the growth of a knowledge-based economy.
Through collaboration with Kenyan state agencies, Huawei will support regular training and share best practices to help public servants respond to evolving threats in cyberspace, he said.
"We will continue to support the government's efforts to build a safe and secure cyberspace for the country," Zhang said, adding that the MoU signed with the state agency will strengthen cooperation aimed at securing digital assets.
The Huawei-sponsored cybersecurity training program targeted government regulatory agencies' personnel, enterprise board members, middle and senior-level managers, cybersecurity managers, and experts.
Topics covered in the program include global cybersecurity trends, international cybersecurity standards, cybersecurity governance practices, data privacy and protection. Enditem
