6.1-magnitude earthquake hits eastern Cuba, no casualties reported

HAVANA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted eastern Cuba early Monday morning, the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) confirmed.

No casualties or major damage have been reported so far.

According to official information, the earthquake occurred at 1:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) about 35 kilometers southwest of Chivirico in the province of Santiago de Cuba, nearly 860 kilometers east of Havana.

Enrique Arango, the head of Cenais, said that the earthquake was registered on a different tectonic fault from the 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred on Nov. 10 in the town of Pilon, nearby eastern province of Granma. Enditem
