MEXICO CITY, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed support for Panama after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to retake control of the Panama Canal.

"The Panama Canal belongs to the Panamanians," said Sheinbaum.

Trump said on Sunday that the fees charged by Panama "are ridiculous" and he "will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us." Furthermore, Trump said that once he reaches the White House, he will strike Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.

Sheinbaum said Mexico would never accept foreign interference and was confident that an agreement on migration, trade and tariffs would be reached.

Trump has threatened Canada and Mexico with 25 percent tariffs on their products for failing to control migration into the United States. Enditem
