YANGON, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The inauguration of Myanmar's second pedestrian underpass took place in Yangon on Monday, with the attendance of the Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Yangon Mayor and other related officials, state-run daily The Mirror reported on Tuesday.

During the ceremony, the SAC chairman presented honorary gifts to the engineers who contributed to the construction of the underpass, the report said.

The construction of the underpass began in October 2023. This underpass, connecting the western entrance of Shwedagon Pagoda to People's Square and Park, has dimensions of 11 feet in height, 23 feet in width, and 461 feet in length, it said.

It features four entrances and is designed to accommodate up to 14,000 people per hour. Additionally, the facility includes four escalators and two lifts to assist the elderly and people with disabilities, it added.

This infrastructure development is aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and alleviating traffic congestion, the report said.

The underpass not only benefits the local community but also stands as an example of urban development in Yangon, it added.

The country's first pedestrian underpass is located near the Yangon University of Education on Pyay Road in Kamayut Township. Enditem
