YANGON, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Thakayta Crocodile Farm in Yangon, the largest crocodile farm in Myanmar, has reopened to visitors after years of closure due to COVID-19 pandemic, an official from the farm said on Tuesday.
"We carried out renovations during the closure period, particularly focusing on visitor safety," Daw Myat Khine Mar, a deputy director from the Department of Fisheries and in charge of the crocodile farm, told Xinhua on Tuesday.
The crocodile farm, operated by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, is a unique symbol in Myanmar, she said.
"There is no other crocodile farm of this scale run by a government department for conservation in Myanmar," she said.
"We are conserving saltwater crocodiles, which are on the brink of extinction, and are breeding them naturally," she added.
The crocodile farm currently housing 631 crocodiles, was established in 1978. It began to receive visitors in 1997, according to an official report. Enditem
