YAOUNDE, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Voting for Chad's legislative, municipal and provincial elections began on Sunday.

Polling stations opened at 6:00 a.m. and will close at 6:00 p.m. local time, with vote counting to follow.

According to the country's National Election Management Agency, more than 8 million voters are expected to cast their ballots.

"I was able to fulfill my duty to vote for those who will represent me at the legislative, provincial and municipal levels. Dec. 29, 2024, is a historic day for our country because these elections will pave the way for the era of decentralization, so desired and awaited by the Chadian people. It will be effective," Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the country's leader, said after voting in the national capital of N'Djamena.

The main opposition party, known as The Transformers, has boycotted the elections, claiming that the results will be rigged.

Election results are expected in mid-January. Enditem
