JERUSALEM, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military announced on Sunday that one of its soldiers was killed in the Gaza Strip during an ongoing raid in Jabalia.
In a statement, the military identified the soldier as 22-year-old Yuval Shoham from the 9th Armored Battalion's Iron Tracks Brigade, saying he "fell during combat in the northern Gaza Strip."
The military said the circumstances of his death were under investigation. Israel's Channel 12 reported initial findings suggesting it was an operational accident.
Shoham is the 824th Israeli soldier killed since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October last year, according to official Israeli figures.
Also on Sunday, the military reported that a soldier from the Nahal Infantry Brigade was severely injured "during combat in the northern Gaza Strip."
Meanwhile, Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades stated that its fighters targeted an Israeli Merkava tank with a "highly explosive device" and subsequently struck a rescue force with an Al-Yassin 105 shell in Jabalia. Enditem
