BAGHDAD, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Seven Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in a military operation in central Iraq, the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service said in a statement on Monday.
The Iraqi counterterrorism troops carried out an operation in coordination with the Iraqi air forces against IS hideouts in the Hamrin mountain range spanning Salahudin and Diyala provinces, the statement said, without providing the timing of the operation.
The operation resulted in the killing of seven IS militants and the destruction of 20 IS hideouts, three caves, and five tunnels, it added.
The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerrilla attacks against security forces and civilians. Enditem
