KABUL, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A total of 50 Afghan inmates imprisoned in Pakistan have been set free and returned to their homeland Afghanistan, the country's Ministry for Refugees and Repatriation said on Thursday.

According to the ministry's statement, the detainees returned to Afghanistan on Wednesday through the Torkham border crossing in eastern Nangarhar and the Spin Boldak border crossing in southern Kandahar province.

The ministry also said that 35 Afghan detainees had been released from Pakistani jails and returned home in October last year.

Currently, 8,000 to 9,000 Afghan citizens are imprisoned abroad. Most of them are held in Iran and Pakistan, data from the country's prison administration showed in September last year. Enditem
