SYDNEY, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Police were investigating after a child died in a caravan fire in southeastern Australia.

Emergency services crews were deployed to a street in the small town of Boort, 215 km northwest of Melbourne in the southeastern state of Victoria, at 5:50 p.m. local time on Thursday following reports that a caravan had caught fire.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and the body of a child was found inside.

Victoria Police said in a statement that its arson explosives squad had been notified and that an arson chemist would attend the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

"Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place," police said.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact police. Enditem
