SANAA, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi group said Friday that it launched missile and drone attacks on the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

In a statement broadcast by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said the group launched a hypersonic ballistic missile at a power station in eastern Tel Aviv early Friday morning, claiming that the missile had hit the target accurately.

Sarea said the group also launched a bomb-laden drone targeting a "military target" in Tel Aviv.

He vowed that attacks against Israel "will continue until the war in Gaza stops."

Earlier on Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that it had intercepted a missile fired by Houthis, which activated sirens across central Israel, including in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, sending millions of residents to shelters.

Israel's national emergency service, Magen David Adom, said 12 people were injured while heading to shelters.

Later, the IDF said in a separate statement that it had intercepted a drone launched from Yemen before it crossed into Israeli territory. In this case, sirens were not activated.

The Houthi group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has been launching regular rocket and drone attacks against Israel and disrupting "Israeli-linked" shipping in the Red Sea since November 2023 to show solidarity with Palestinians amid their conflict with Israel in the Gaza Strip.

In response, Israel has carried out multiple large-scale airstrikes, whereas a U.S.-led coalition stationed in the area has regularly conducted airstrikes against Houthi targets to deter the group, prompting the Houthis to expand attacks to include U.S. warships.

On Thursday, leader of the Houthi group in Yemen Abdulmalik al-Houthi said via al-Masirah TV that 106 Houthi militants were killed and 314 others injured in airstrikes by the United States and Israel throughout 2024. Enditem
